Penis Cleaning:
It is important you check and clean your boars Penis regulary to keep him healthy and prevent infection. Boars do get bits stuck to there. You need as part of your health checks to regularly extrude the penis out and clean off the gunk, this usually consists of a white chalky film (it smells), and bedding debris.
When? It is probably easiest to do this doring or just after a monthly bath. You should check more often than this, particularly if you are aware he is prone to build up of discharge in that area.
How? The pictures on this page (Thankyou Wendi at Thistle Cavies) Gently press either side of the penis until it extrudes. Remove ( gently ) any bits of hay that have stuck in there and any dirt ( etc ) that may have accumulated. Don't be afraid of hurting him as he will probaly quite enjoy the procedure. Then gently with a clean piece of soft cloth soaked in warm water cleanse the area fully. (Remove the 'gunk!). Do not use cotton wool here, because you can get bits of cotton fluff stuck in the area. Do not be alarmed if you find long white elasticy looking worm things, this a semen plug, and some can be quite long. You need to gently pull it out.
Please Note: The 'hooks' you can see on this Penis are completely normal and part of the boar. Please do not mistake them for bits of bedding and remove them as this will be extremely painful for the poor boar (& does happen).

Finally- Check the bottom too for any sign of impactation. Karen's Josh (Left) kindly shows us what this looks like! From time to time you may need to clean the anal area too, even if your boar is not impacted. Gently roll the anal sak back (it sort of rolls back either side) and gently remove any bits of hay etc that are in there and sluice with water. DO NOT USE PRESSURE ON THE INSIDE OF THE ANAL SAK AS THE SKIN HERE IS VERY THIN AND CAN BECOME TORN. It may also make him sore as it is a sensitive area of skin. It is normal to find a white greasy deposit in there. this is produced byhis scent gland so has a distict smell to it. Don't try to remove this its supposed to be there.
