What is a boar?

A boar is a male guinea pig!

Guinea Pigs or Cavies?

Why boars? Some people suggest that boars are more human friendly & become more tame than sows. They are also lovely & big in comparison to sows (usually!). Making them less delicate & the perfect size for cuddles & handling!

Sadly boars seem to have a hard lot when it comes to finding pet homes. They are often over looked in favor of sows when people come to choose their guinea pigs... they tend to be left in the pet shop, breeders or rescue for the longest period of time. This is another attraction of boars... they deserve lovely homes!

Even when they do find homes they are sadly often kept alone to live solitary, lonely lives. WHY this occurs could be for any number of reasons. Perhaps people are put off by the slightly more complicated nature of keeping pairs of boars. But boars can be kept in pairs in a number of different ways! We can make this simple for you with our 5 part guide to the options when it comes to keeping boars. PLEASE DO NOT KEEP BOARS IN GROUPS LARGER THAN PAIRS.

The proper name for a guinea pig is a 'cavy' however, on this site we prefer to use 'guinea pigs' for 2 reasons:

1. Guinea pig is the name most used (& known!) among PET owners & this site is mainly aimed at PET owners

2. 'Guinea pig' has associations with animal testing. In using it we are ensuring we do not forget or ignore the plight of lab animals.
