Our Boars: Zippy

Adopting Zippy

Zippy came into our lives when we were least expecting him... and he gave us back what was missing after the sad loss of Prince and particularly the huge character that was Spam in a year. Luckily a good friend of mine, Kate Carter, who fosters piggys and finds them nice new homes told me she had 2 lovely piggys waiting for a new home who were not only handsome but also full of character. I hadn't really planned to get more piggys at the time...

Anyway... these 2 boys were Zippy, a huge gorgeous buff boar aged 2 and his friend Georgie an elderly Black, White and Tan Abyssinian. Kate send me a pigture of them and I fell in love with Zippys instantly. I had seen many many pigtures of buffs because they are my favourite breed... but none of them were like Spam. B ut As soon as I saw Zippys picture I cried; he had the same googly poppy out eyes and short rounded nose. And Kate had told me about his personality, friendly, noisey and full of character. He was perfect. I knew I would love them to come live here. They would be the first established pair we had ever adopted. It would be nice to have the hard work in pairing them up already done for a change!

Although they were in rescue Zippy and Georgie were very lucky. They don't have a sad story and have never really had a hard life. They were well cared for by their original owner who took them to Kate for rehoming only because she was moving abroad to live. Then they were well cared for and loved by Kate, and then they found me! So it sounds like they have always been spoiled much loved piggys.

Anyway... I told Kate I would be happy to give them a home, but there was a problem. We were just about to more house and moving can be hectic without new pets! Not only that but we were going to be having a nice dedicated pig room that needed to be done. Luckily for me Kate was only too happy to hold on to the boys a couple more months until we were ready for them. And I was even able to watch them on Kate's Web cam a couple of times. When I did it was obvious Kate was right- these boys were huge characters. I saw Zippy manage to figure out how to get out of the run and try to make a break for it and he was adjusting the camera by nudging it with his head.

Moving In

Finally in May 2006 the day arrived! Zippy and Georgie moved in. When we took Zippy out of the carrier I found Zippy was even more of a dead ringer for Spam than I realised... He even had an ear tag on the same ear! The settled so fast, you wouldn't have believed they had just been on a 3 hour car journey. As soon as they were put in their new abode they did a little lap to check it out and settled right in. I have never seen a pig settle so quickly!

I wonder if it was the laid back temperament of both boys or the fact they were part of a pair that helped them both settle instantly. I think perhaps a combination of both. Either way they were soon rumbling over who would sleep in the grassy hutch first and who the fiddle stix. Meaning I had to order another grassy hutch so they could have one each!.

In the weeks that followed Zippy continued to make a big impression. His walk was even more humorous in person and yes... he looked and acted very much like Spam. A pleasant living reminder of my favourite pig. He seemed to love having a nice big C&C pen and lots of hidey holes to explore, and in between playing with Georgie who was always strutting his stuff, and telling Zippy he was boss, he occasionally found time to lap his pen... pop corning as he did!

Above: On his first photo shoot Zippys 'cheeky-chappy' personalityshone through. I often take pigtures of piggys with fruit and vegetable props. Zippy was posing with a nice apple when he decided to take a bite! As you can see from the 3 pics, The center pic came first he tucked right in, then I had to take the pic with the apple... if you look you can see the chunk missing and finally the pic of the 'damage'. Needless to say I cut it nice and small from him after and he ate it. Can't believe he started muching within seconds! This has never happened before. He is the only one to eat a prop before a photo... but he does love his food. He is greedy. His eyes glaze over when he sees food and he is on a mission!

Goodbye to a Special Friend

At 2 years old Zippy had lived with Georgie (aged 6) all his life. Sadly late in July 2006 Georgie died and the two friends were parted. I found Georgie sleeping in his grassy hut. He had gone to the bridge. Zippy had seen him and knew his friend was gone. From now on only Zippy would come and greet me when I went into the pigroom, not the pair of them like usual.

Zippy is bearing up really well. He has taken it in his stride and is eating and playing as normal. Still wheeking everytime the fridge door opens or he hears a foot on the stairs! He now lives in the middle of our set up, with just a mesh wall between him and Rainbow on one side and him and HUgo and Bubba on the other. He loves this as he can chat with them and go look at them. I would very much like to see him with company in his cage again one day soon though... watch this space!

Baby Joy! Zippy has found a new friend in baby Boar Bungle.

Bungle came into our loves After Georgie's sad death Zippy seemed to cope surprisingly well, especially after we moved him into the center of our set up. This meant he was surrounded by other guineas on both sides, separated from them only by a mesh dividing wall.

However at two years old we felt it would be sad to see such a friendly and sociable pig live out the rest of his days without company in his cage again. So we started to think about getting him a new companion. His new friend has recently arrived- read all about them on Bungle's page
