YOU CAN…

Plan ahead

If you are thinking of getting a guinea pig find out about them. Are they the right pets for you? Do you have the time, money and space? Will you be able to commit to one for the whole duration of its life. If so enjoy your guinea pig! If not then please don't get any. A great starting place is to get yourself a good book or two on guinea pigs.

Share your knowledge

There is allot of misinformation out there. Tell others things you discover about caring for guinea pigs properly. Tell people you know who keep guinea pigs or set up your own website

Look after your own pigs well

Everyone can try to care for their pigs as best they can. Try to give them everything they need to be happy. Plenty of things to keep them busy & lots of free exercise. Most of all stick by your pigs. Love them forever– don't abandon them if they get ill or you or your children loose interest.

Adopt a rescue

If you are thinking of getting a guinea pig or already have them now but are planning to get more try to find a rescue near to you rather than buying from pet shops & breeders. You will be giving a home to a guinea pig in need of one & you will know far more about the animal than had you bought it from a pet shop. You are also likely to be able to contact the rescue for advice– especially useful if you are new to guinea pigs (like I was). Be prepared to travel a reasonable distance to find one. Rescue centers have guinea pigs of different ages, breeds & temperaments so there is bound to be a pig that is right for you! Many 'surplus' animals from the pet trade end up in rescues anyway. Please don't endorse this! See the links page to find a rescue near you.

Support Animal Charities that help guinea pigs

Help out all you can with your local rescues or rescues on line. This could involve anything from offering help with bathing & mucking out to fundraising or being a fosterer, until guinea pigs find permanent homes. You could also buy lovely guinea pig gifts & things from those that have fundraising shops.

Sponsor a Guinea

You can help out the permanent residents of some rescue centers by sponsoring a pig. Do it for yourself or it will make a lovely gift idea for children and adults alike! Maybe as a present for your pet too!
