Our Boars: Georgie

Adopting Georgie

After loosing Prince and particularly the huge character that was Spam in a year it began to feel rather empty here at Barmy4boars! Luckily a good friend of mine, Kate Carter, who fosters piggys and finds them nice new homes told me she had 2 lovely piggys waiting for a new home who were not only handsome but also full of character. I hadn't really planned to get more piggys at the time... but As soon as I saw their picture I knew I would love them to come live here.

Anyway... these 2 boys were Zippy, a huge gorgeous buff boar aged 2 and this guy. Georgie. An elderly Black, White and Tan Abyssinian who was 5 years old, nearly 6 who had a funny face and a bit of a look of a cow with the black and white. To be honest initially it was Zippy I was taken with, and I was only really having Georgie because they were a pair. But I'm so glad that I did have him because I wouldn't have chosen him otherwise and that means I would have missed out on soooooooooo much!

Although they were in rescue Zippy and Georgie were very lucky. They don't have a sad story and have never really had a hard life. They were well cared for by their original owner who took them to Kate for rehoming only because she was moving abroad to live. Then they were well cared for and loved by Kate, and then they found me! So it sounds like they have always been spoiled much loved piggys.

Anyway... I told Kate I would be happy to give them a home, but there was a problem. We were just about to more house and moving can be hectic without new pets! Not only that but we were going to be having a nice dedicated pig room that needed to be done. Luckily for me Kate was only too happy to hold on to the boys a couple more months until we were ready for them. And I was even able to watch them on Kate's Web cam a couple of times. When I did it was obvious Kate was right- these boys were huge characters. I saw Georgie's funny walk strutting in front of the camera, and how cheeky he was... rumbling at Zippy and chasing him around in away that defied his years!

Moving In

Finally in May 2006 the day arrived! Georgie and Zippy moved in. You wouldn't have believed he had just been on a 3 hour car journey. As soon as he was put in his new abode he did a little lap to check it out and settled right in. I have never seen a pig settle so quickly! I wonder if it was Georgie's age, the laid back temperament of both boys or the fact they were part of a pair that helped them both settle instantly. I think perhaps a combination of the 3 factors.

In the weeks that followed Georgie continued to make a big impression. His walk was even more humorous in person and yes... he looked even more like a very cute cow! He seemed to love having a nice big C&C pen and lots of hidey wholes to explore, and in between strutting his stuff, telling Zippy he was boss, eating and sleeping he occasionally found time to lap his pen... pop corning as he did! Like a piglet not an old man. He really became a favorite here, a very friendly happy boy who made himself noticed! He fell asleep on my sister Sara's lap when she came to visit... such a sweetie... and very relaxed and at ease with humans.

Goodbye Georgie

Sadly late in July 2006 I found Georgie sleeping in his grassy hut. He had gone to the bridge. Usually I wouldn't have looked in on him so late, but had just had a visit from my sister for me to have a look at one of her piggy's to see what I thought about a possible abscess. When she had gone I popped into the pig room to say goodnight to the boys and noticed Georgie didn't come to greet me as he usually did along side his pal Zippy. I lifted his Grassy hut to see what he was up to and he was laid out... I knew he was no longer with us... that he wouldn't come to greet me again.

Although I know he was 6 it was still a shock, as he was so full of life he looked as if he could live much longer. He was here such a short time but I know it was happy... and that he always had a good life with his other owner.

Goodnight Georgie boy... still miss you so much. Thankyou for coming into my life. I'm sure you are bossing everyone around at the Bridge. I am looking after Zippy for you, and he is looking after me too.
